Android 4.3 and the new Nexus 7 Everything you need to know about ... - Computer World (press release)

While new Nexus 7 we knew almost everything else before the conference, Google, so new in the operating system carefully hidden from the prying eyes of journalists.

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean is not packed with any great innovative and imaginative ficzerami. Instead, we have a creeping revolution, evolution and useful improvements. Hence, probably the decision to leave the “old” names for the new edition of the system. This is the case for the second time anyway.

New Jelly Bean like the two previous (4.1 and 4.2) is an upgrade balanced. New products are introduced slowly to the new edition of the system without major problems to work on older devices. Apparently, Google is hoping that avoiding drastic changes in the functionality and the interface of Android, small steps can cope with a serious problem of fragmentation. Manufacturers of smartphones and tablets will not have to specifically make an effort in order to release their own updates based on pure Android. Let’s hope that this policy will be effective and Jelly Bean finally hits on most devices.

What’s new in the old Jelly Bean?

From the perspective of the platform, application developers, and probably for some time users, the biggest change is the introduction to the Android standard support for OpenGL ES 3.0 . If you do not say, you should enclose the matter straight. OpenGL ES graphics library is somewhat analogous to those familiar with Windows (Microsoft DirectX). The latest standard allows developers to create better games with much more realistic graphics.

Android is gaining so slight edge over the competition. Apple iOS still only supports OpenGL ES 2.0, but probably pretty soon this will change. Unfortunately, the difference is only holders see the latest equipment. The support of the operating system must in fact go hand in hand with support from the hardware, and so integrated graphics processor SoC.

second and in my opinion much more important innovation is the introduction to Android ability to create profiles of limitations , which will complement the support for multiple accounts introduced in Android 4.2. It’s mainly the convenience of those people who use tablets with Android in a single family (in smartphones multiple accounts and profiles rather crap). Until now, if you wanted your child to share the tablet without the risk that something breaks you, you had to put him separate Google Account. The solution is not too comfortable, because in the world of Android to accounts corresponding applications are purchased on Google Play. The new account is therefore necessary to do new purchases. When one tablet uses parent and child, the solution is just not comfortable. Our comfort rather own Google Account does not need, and we do not want to expose yourself to buying the same game twice. Profile of limitations completely solve the problem of sharing devices within the family.

parent can make a child Android 4.3 limited access to your account, create a separate profile for him, and cut off from the cumbersome application (for example a Web browser and YouTube).

Another new feature worth mentioning is the application Google Play Games , which is a response to Apple’s Game Center. It is based on an ecosystem Play Game Services, a new service announced at this year’s conference Google I / O. What is it? In a nutshell, to create a meaningful environment that is designed to encourage users to use Android as a gaming platform. Google Play Games allow us to invite friends to the game, will allow us to compete with them and share their achievements. This corner androidowy player – for fun, but serving only to have fun.

new app Play Games is to encourage players to pull to play with friends. Apple has its own Game Center, and Google found that he had to finally do something with similar functionality
