Upgrade to Android 4 ICS - guide and pitfalls that this brings - dobreprogramy

life unless each user’s electronic equipment allowing more or less customize the operating system, there comes a day that you decide to install something better. This is mainly in the segment of the broader consumer electronics. Belonging to the computers (other / newer Windows, Linux), smart phones (the new version of Android, Windows Phone, Symbian and soon SalfishOS). Recent TV, they are not alone in this respect, and every move you have the opportunity to update their software.

Why update?

From experience I can say that to try to upgrade you need a boost. We can distinguish three kinds of pulses:

  • first There was a crash of the system, you need to restore the device to act.
  • 2 We are passionate about new technologies and we like to test it at the latest, even in beta.
  • 3 We need a renovation to meet minimum requirements for the application.

In the end I was happy with the transaction, but more on that later.

SE Xperia Arc S

equipment on which I decided to upload it later Android Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S also known as a model LT18i. This 4.2-inch smartphone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 processor clocked at 1.4 GHz, 512 MB of RAM, 1GB of internal memory and a 8.1 megapixel camera. It was introduced in August 2011., And released on the market in late 2011. Was available pre-installed with Android Gingerbread 2.3.4.

brands Orange and stockowy system

over a year, there is the official version of Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS 4.0.4) for Arc S released by Sony. Unfortunately, Orange, of which I am a subscriber, branduje (blames the brand) and lock the bootloader on its phones sold and smartphones. Of course, so far not been taken by them for clients version of the Arc S which means he still does not have the ability to update the system using the official software for mobile phones which is the PC Companion. For my part, the consumer, this situation shows how operators and equipment makers are pulling money from customers. Want to have a higher system? – Buy a new phone, because there is no official support for your current model. Therefore, you have to use other means – I would not be computer scientist and electronic freak if I had not tried ;-)

update, flash and rootowanie

Because consumer unfriendly practices Orange, is to use the less formal methods to update the system on your smartphone. Knowing that there is an official and is not saddled with the brand (not branded) for my phone system directed his steps include towards, known to all users of Android, XDA Developers forum.

NOTE! All operations you perform at your own risk, and although they appear to be safe it can happen to damage your phone.

As a result of research, a lot of trial and error associated with this was that instruction and I could not do with your bricks – which seems to be the most important in this case ;-)

preparation, or download the necessary software

process of uploading new software is very easy thanks to the wide community of Android, which develops and makes its application to this effect. However, without prior preparation may take more time than anticipated.

The following instructions are for Windows, since all the necessary applications to run in this particular system.

Grab

:

  • Stockowy (without branding) and designed for SE Xperia Arc S (LT18i) Android ICS 4.04, the latest build is labeled 4.1.B.0.587 and is targeted to the region of Central Europe (1254-2716), in including Polish -> Android_4.0.4_LT18i_4.1.B.0.587_ (1254-2716) _Polska.ftf
  • kernel (kernel) of the same version 4.1.B.0.587 -> Android_4.0.4_LT18i_4.1.B.0.587_kernel.ftf – will be needed in the rootowania.
  • kernel (kernel) earlier build 4.1.A.0.562 -> Android_4.0.4_LT18i_4.1.A.0.562_Kernel.ftf, for which there is a trick that allows the system zrootowanie.
  • latest version of Flashtool which allows you to flash your phone and upload system for phones from Sony (formerly Sony Ericsson). Install with the drivers that are installed in the directory: Flashtool drivers

  • allow Unknown Source applications:
  • 2 Select Flashmode.
  • 3 Select the directory where you downloaded the image of the system ROM Android_4.0.4_LT18i_4.1.B.0.587_ (1254-2716) _Polska.ftf and select all options in the WIPE – this means that the version change all data and configurations will be lost! so as not to create conflicts between the versions. Disappear contacts, SMS, and all that is stored in the internal memory of the phone. The memory card was intact.
  • 4 Click Flash. Turn off the phone. Hold the Back arrow and hold it connect the cable to the phone. Wait until the operation is complete.
  • At this point you are ready to turn on your phone and enjoy the Android Ice Cream Sandwich on MAGNOLIA phone.

What is rootowanie?

Root for the Android, in the simplest sense, access to all the Android system files and the ability to any modification.

Pros:

  • any system modifications
  • we can use applications that require root access, which usually improve the system, and Google Play store there are quite a lot
  • in combination with unlocked bootloader allows you to upload a modified version of the system (the so-called custom ROM)
  • making a complete copy of the application and the system
  • installing applications entirely on the memory card, not just their data
  • uninstall “unsolicited” applications, such as provided by the manufacturer or telecommunications provider, and Orange.

  • gives you unlimited access to the system and equipment, which if misused could lead to system instability
  • doing rootowanie, thus unofficial software to load, resulting in the loss of warranty
  • increases the scope for all manner of viruses

Why zrootowa?em your phone?

answer to this question is very simple. Zrootowa?em your SE Arc S due to lack of internal memory to install applications. Earlier I wrote the phone specification and there was talk about 1GB of memory. Yes, it is available, but after installing the system and the number of necessary applications available is our max 100MB and rapidly decreasing. Partially helps transfer option settings and application data to a memory card, which is available from Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but it slows max 50MB, which we still have only 150MB.

ideal solution becomes a record of all applications on a specially crafted memory card, and specifically on one of the two partitions that I created on the memory card. One of them is a EXT3 partition, and the other is FAT32, which already has been present on karcie.Sztuczka lies in the fact that having access Root (any, and I had to Android 2.3.4), we can craft a script that will install EXT3 partition the memory card in the system and Bookmark it somewhere in the system. In the background can also move applications to the memory card and the phone just leave a link / shortcut. Thus, the free space, and this is what we wanted after all :)

I will not describe the details of the script itself, and will present a great Link2SD application that does everything that I have described, and in addition allows you to manage the entire process, select specific applications and wears it in a user-friendly interface. I used it before and now I use the upgrade. To do this, however, I had zrootowa? his new preloaded Android ICS 4.0.4 – 4.1.B.0.587.

Rootowanie

described in the previous paragraph, why, and now will describe how to do it.

fastest way I know of to upload the older kernel (kernel), which is available trick or even an exploit that allowed to gain root user. The trick works by emulating an android and send some commands through ADB (drivers) to your phone.

  • first Get a set called DooMLoRD_v1_Xperia-2011-ICS-ROOT-emu-busybox-su, who rootuje phone, upload the busybox (a set of scripts and commands familiar with linux) and installs the Superuser app that allows you to manage access to root privileges.
  • 2 Upload kernel version 4.1.A.0.562 in the same way as before uploading of a whole system. Follow the instructions in the section Flashing and points. 3 Select the image kernel version 4.1.A.0.562
  • 3 Disable any applications that might disturb the rootowania, particularly Flashtool, PC Companion – it happens that also blocks antivirus operations that is why you may want to turn off his / pause for a moment.
  • 4 Unzip the package DooMLoRD_v1_Xperia-2011-ICS-ROOT-emu-busybox-su and run the script runme.bat . Follow the instructions on the screen. During this time, do not do anything with the phone, it will switch on and off several times to.
  • 5 After seeing the string “ALL DONE” , we can upload the kernel to the latest version, which is the one we have 4.1.B.0.587.
  • For this purpose, again, follow the instructions in the section Flashing and point. 3 select the kernel version 4.1.B.0.587.

But we must remember that it is not memory limited. I still need a place in the phone memory because the application is installed first, and there must be fit, and only then automatically or on user request transferred to the memory card by Link2SD

Summary – if I wanted to go back to GB 2.3.4? NOT

What if Android 4.0.4 we do not like and want to go back to an older version? For this purpose, the link to stockowego ROM for Android version 2.3.4 Android_2.3.4_LT18i_4.0.2.A.0.62_ (1254-2716) _Polska.ftf. It has no brand as evidenced by the ticket in 2716, and for Central Europe and the Polish (ticket 1254). Just upload it as in the preceding sections of this entry.

As I wrote in the heading of this paragraph, I’m not going to go back to an older version of Android. Despite the inability to install FIFA 2014 or Focal, as I mentioned at the beginning, I am delighted to have brought changes to my phone Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4.

These links to manage system images to my hard SkyDrive. I hope it will not disappear because of censorship, and if that happens, please info – I will try to upload somewhere else.
