Android 5.0: Google withdrew from data encryption … – PCLab.pl

When the last year, Google officially presented the Android 5.0 operating system, “Lollipop”, among many declaration was saying that all devices based on the new software platform will default to encrypt all data. When the market began getting the first device with Android 5.0, each of them have encryption enabled by default. The problem is that these devices were first Google’s own products. It turns out that the devices from other manufacturers do not encrypt the data.

The declarations declarations and the reality apparently chose a different path. New products with Android 5.0 coming on the market, and if the data encryption has been lost somewhere along the way. It seems that Google did not require manufacturers to encrypt data as it was announced in September last year. Apparently there was a change of position somewhere between the official presentation of “Lollipop” and quietly introduced in January amendments to the hardware requirements of the new system.

Now the documentation” Android Compatibility Definition “clearly indicates that encryption is not required in the new devices running Android 5.0. Manufacturers need only “provide the service.” The same document indicates that in the future, this requirement may be subject to change, and with subsequent versions of Android encryption may become mandatory. This does not change the fact that Google’s announcement did not end with the implementation of their content.

It is difficult to speculate about what this happened, that Google suddenly and quietly changed her mind. Anyway, some part of consumers can feel deceived unrealized promises. Behind decision may become more arguments about that in. Drop in efficiency of the devices, using the encryption of entire storage media. In the case of the Nexus 6 encryption makes it runs noticeably slower, and the results of some tests show a dramatic decrease in performance.
