Remix OS, a desktop Android on my laptop – experience … – Antyweb

A few days ago I wrote about Remix OS – Android modified in such a way as to resemble Windows. In the end, developers have released an image of a system that once installed. The result?

Remix OS is Android, which was not yet. The system was designed and created with Jide Chinese. Initially, he had only to drive their equipment, but ultimately was made available completely free of charge as an image. This is an alpha version, so it is difficult to expect that everything will work perfectly. The foundation of the system is an open source x86 Android (5.1.1 Lollipop). The rest is completely original project.

Creating a bootable USB flash drive with Remix OS is very easy. By downloading an image from the official website of the project, we also get a small program to complete the process. What is important – not format it in our USB key, and only copies the appropriate files, so we have to do it manually. The creators recommend here USB 3.0 flash drives that support the FAT32 file system (and it should be formatted), have at least 8 GB of storage and allow for speed recording at a speed of 20 MB / s. For me it was only 13.9 MB / s, and the system started, but needed a little more time.

Commissioning also may require us slightly gymnastics. First of all, we must make sure that we have an active boot Legacy. The UEFI mode, unfortunately, memory is not detected. It should be borne in mind and not become discouraged too quickly. The same applies to the start-up process. Here we first choose whether you want to enter in the guest mode or resident. At first no data is stored on the USB key, and in the second – on the contrary. As you might guess, the residents wait much longer to boot – especially the first time. And here comes another problem, because the system creates for our support additional data partition invisible from Windows. Do not be surprised, therefore, as the next time you connect it to your computer you will see a smaller capacity than before. The good news is for sure is that Remix OS run not only on PCs but also Macs.

How does it work?

When he finally Remix OS will start, we will see on the screen a simple wizard, through which we will configure the system language (the list is not Polish – find him then in the system settings), accept the license terms, and connect to a WiFi network. Once that’s done, we’ll see nicely presenting a native of the Windows desktop.

At the bottom edge of the beam we have the capacity as the taskbar. In the lower left corner we have the impressive panel of installed applications. Implemented here search and sorting mechanism. There were also a button for resetting, sleep and shutdown. Right next to the menu button and you find the icon back home, and behind them a list of running applications – just like in Windows. The opposite side of the beam to the tray with all its virtues as a calendar, call management panels, WiFi and Bluetooth, and text input, volume control, and a mechanism for cleaning RAM, and click the extending the notifications panel. This strongly resembles its counterpart from Windows. With its lower edge can find more icons, among others, activation mode without notification, capture screenshots and hiding the lower beam.

Unfortunately, the system itself much to offer is not, because, contrary to previous announcements, not yet implemented here Google applications. Therefore, we will not find here, therefore, no additional software and install their favorites in a manner other than by APK. However, we can also install the Amazon Appstore, where there are a whole bunch of programs. At the start you get only basic solutions: web browser, calculator, music and video players. Of course, this is too little. I installed a few APK, like Google Docs, Word Mobile for Android, OneNote’a, and even a few games. I must admit that worked surprisingly well. Windows are scalable, but there is nothing to prevent a run programs in full screen mode. Then, following the example of Windows, at the top we have a slide out from behind the screen bar with buttons closing, maximizing and minimizing. With games it is slightly worse, which may be due to a number of issues – from the integrated GPU on my laptop, and optimized drivers ending badly. The overall smoothness and speed of the system but I can not complain.

When you move files and directories using the built-in manager. It is very similar to a windows explorer (like everything in this system), but has a slightly a changed structure. We find here, among others, catalogs for different types of media, as well as a panel indicating the available space. Unfortunately, the explorer not got access to files on the hard drive of my computer. Remix OS does not serve us, therefore, to save data in case of failure of Windows.

System Configuration options are very similar to what it offers the standard Android. There will not be any frills here. Unfortunately, I have not found any more advanced task manager, which can be a problem. But I’m pleasantly surprised cooperation with individual modules. I had no problems with mouse support, WiFi, Bluetooth and even built-in laptop webcam. The basic problem of the keyboard is the lack of support for Polish characters – if not this, how important detail would be ideal.

What do I say?

Remix OS is currently a project in alpha version so for creators long way to go before they create a tool fully functional and usable for everyday work. But does it make sense? What I system, which is dyed Android and imitates Windows? Applications are few. We can carry it with you always, and this in itself is an advantage. Thus we have at hand your favorite programs and the necessary files. It’s more versatile than the cloud or web applications, because it does not require network connectivity. We can at any point hook up to your computer and continue the work completed. Such a solution will certainly find its supporters.

So far, however, can be mainly in terms of interest. Remix OS must receive applications on Google Play, you start to better serve the GPU and support the Polish characters. Then he would be happy to throw in a bag USB flash drive with the system – maybe someday I’ll need it
